Vilnius Castle Complex
The Vilnius Castle Complex is a cluster of medieval and early modern fortifications and state buildings on Gediminas Hill beside the Neris River in Vilnius, Lithuania. The surviving elements in the complex include the cylindrical Gediminas Tower on the hilltop and the Lower Castle ensemble of the Grand Ducal (Royal) Palace and Vilnius Cathedral. Today the site is part of the National Museum of Lithuania.

As it stood in 1600
The shape it held in its prime.
Perched on an oval, artificially flattened limestone hill above the Neris River, the complex is dominated by a cylindrical red-brick keep (Gediminas Tower) with a stone base and crenellated parapet, adjoining a low rectangular stone keep with red tile roofs. Below the hill lie long, white-painted palace wings and church volumes with red-tiled roofs facing a shared paved forecourt. Earthen glacis, patched terracing and stone curtain wall fragments surround the hill, with a paved approach winding up from the riverside.
