Kalaja
Ulcinj Castle (Kalaja) is the ancient fortified old town of Ulcinj, Montenegro, built on a small rocky peninsula at the Pristan Gulf. It preserves layers of Illyrian cyclopean masonry, medieval citadel elements such as the Tower of the Balšić, Venetian and Ottoman-era houses and public spaces, and a dense network of narrow streets, squares and fountains. The modern town developed outside this fortified settlement.

The shape it held in its prime.
Perched on a low rocky peninsula into the Pristan Gulf, the Old Town has a compact, irregular silhouette dominated by a tall square citadel tower rising above clustered two- and three‑storey stone houses with pitched tiled roofs. Massive Cyclopean wall sections of irregular large blocks survive at the base; continuous curtain walls with two main gates read along the landward and seaward approaches. Arched arcades open onto a small market square and stone fountains punctuate narrow winding streets.
