Darłowo Castle
The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes (Darłowo Castle) is a Gothic brick castle in Darłowo on Poland's Baltic coast, begun in 1352 as a ducal residence of the House of Pomerania. The building was enlarged in the 15th–16th centuries and later used as a warehouse, prison and from 1930 as a museum. Its plan is approximately square and it retains a prominent 24-metre tower.

Compact, near-square red-brick castle with stout curtain walls and a prominent roughly 24-metre high rectangular tower rising above the roofline. Roofs vary between steep red tiled gables and lower greenish metal-clad hip roofs; some façades are lime-plastered pale cream. Narrow vertical window slits and small rectangular windows puncture the walls. The castle stands close to the riverbank with a lower riverside mill/warehouse building attached and earthen dikes visible around the site.

The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes at Darłowo — the only Gothic castle on the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea — was begun in 1352 in the reign of Bogislaw V, whose rule opened the alliance with the Hanseatic League. Though only a secondary residence of the House of Pomerania, it was enlarged and modernised through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries into a worthy royal residence, its near-square plan dominated by a 24-metre tower.
The greatest expansion came under Eric of Pomerania, who rebuilt the castle to the design of his previous residence, Kronborg. Duke Bogislaw X added a new wing and Duke Barnim XI made further changes; after a great fire devastated the castle in 1624, the last duke of the House of Pomerania, Bogislaw XIV, rebuilt it — the castle lost many of its defences, and a chapel was built inside the Duke Hall.
After the duke's death his widow, Duchess Elisabeth of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, took over the castle and lived there until her own death. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it served as a warehouse and a prison, and in 1930 it was turned into the museum it remains today.
