Castelo de Lagos
The Castle of Lagos is the medieval fortification system that surrounded and defended the town of Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal. Its irregular pentagonal enceinte includes medieval curtain walls, multiple towers and later artillery bastions, and it stood as the town's principal defensive works through the Age of Discoveries and into the early modern period.

An irregular pentagonal defensive circuit of continuous curtain walls and projecting bastions that encircle the old town; three named flank bastions (Santa Maria, Alcaria and São Francisco) project outward to cover approaches while four taller medieval towers (Praça de Armas, Conception, Porta Room and Santo Amaro) punctuate the wall-line. The walls surround the urban core clustered around the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and stand above the town's harbour approaches, adapted with wide gun-emplacements and ramparts for artillery in their finished state.

The Castle of Lagos is not a single keep but the fortification system that wrapped the whole town of Lagos in the Algarve — an irregular pentagonal enceinte of medieval curtain walls and towers, later reinforced with artillery bastions. These walls were the town's principal means of defence through the Age of Discoveries and into the early modern period.
Royal attention shaped the town within. King Manuel I granted Lagos a second foral charter in 1504, reformed a decade later, setting in train the construction of the Governors' Palace. Under the expansionist King Sebastian, Lagos was raised to a city in 1573, becoming the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve and the residence of its Captains General and Governors.
