Castelo de Sesimbra
The Castle of Sesimbra (also called Castle of the Moors) is a medieval fortress perched on a cliff above a cove on the Setúbal peninsula in Portugal. Its surviving stone curtain walls and square crenellated towers dominate the headland; a small castle church sits within the enclosure. The site was substantially reinforced in the Middle Ages and today has been conserved and can be visited on foot.

Perched on a rocky, scrub-covered cliff above a small harbour, the castle has a high, tall square keep and at least one smaller square tower linked by a continuous crenellated curtain wall. Built of roughly dressed pale-brown limestone or sandstone blocks, the wall line steps with the ridge and is topped by regular rectangular merlons and narrow vertical arrow-slit openings. In prime condition the towers and curtain formed an unbroken fortified silhouette against the sky, with an open inner courtyard and a small chapel inside.

The Castle of Sesimbra, also known as the Castle of the Moors, crowns a cliff above the cove at Sesimbra on the Setúbal peninsula. Its surviving stone curtain walls and square crenellated towers dominate the headland, and within the enclosure stands the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, built by Afonso I.
Substantially reinforced in the Middle Ages, the fortress had its ramparts strengthened again in 1693 along with other improvements, and the castle church was restored in 1721. Classified as a National Monument on 16 June 1910, the site has been conserved and can be visited on foot.
