Castle of Bragança
The Castle of Bragança is a medieval fortress in the historic centre of Bragança, Portugal, occupying an ovoid walled perimeter with a dominant rectangular keep and multiple round turrets. Built and modified from the medieval period through the early modern era, the keep houses the Church of Santa Maria and the site's medieval pillory and today contains a historic military museum. The fortress has been preserved and restored and remains a major monument in the city.

A massive square stone keep rises above an ovoid curtain wall of grey-brown shale masonry with lighter sandstone dressings at corners and openings. The keep is topped by crenellated battlements with four cylindrical corner watchtowers and has two twin-mullioned (mainelada) Gothic windows on its façades. A low curtain wall reinforced by multiple round turrets and a round-arched gate with an outer barbican encloses a broad paved bailey; a smaller square tower with a red-tiled roof stands nearby.

The Castle of Bragança stands in the historic centre of the city, a well-preserved medieval fortress whose turbulent history runs from occupation in the Moorish period through the devastation and reconstruction that accompanied the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The marriage of Afonso, 1st Duke of Braganza, to Beatriz, daughter of Nuno Álvares Pereira, began the House of Braganza.
