Castle of Loulé
The Castle of Loulé is a medieval fortress in Loulé in the Algarve region of Portugal, classified as a National Monument. The surviving ensemble includes three substantial square towers and stretches of curtain wall, with the remains of the town hall located within the enclosure. Much of the original wall line is incorporated into the surrounding town fabric.

A compact medieval fortress of pale ochre limestone seen as a continuous curtain wall punctuated by three large, square, crenellated towers with vertical arrow-slit openings. The stone is roughly coursed with visible tooling and mortar joints; the parapet shows regular merlons. The castle sits directly against the town on a gentle grassy rise, the wall running into adjacent buildings and enclosing inner courtyards and low stone structures.

The Castle of Loulé in the Algarve was conquered in the 11th century by Ferdinand, King of León, though held for little time. In 1422 or 1462 Henrique de Meneses, 1st Count of Loulé, rebuilt the towers and walls of the castle.
Classified a National Monument since 20 June 1924, the castle survives as three towers within the cordon of walls, with the remnants of the town hall inside the structure. Most of the old wall line is now incorporated into the buildings of the growing town, visible along the streets outside the original perimeter.
