Castle of Leiria
The Castle of Leiria is a medieval hilltop castle in Leiria, Portugal, whose fabric reflects Romanesque, several phases of Gothic, and early-16th-century building campaigns. The complex contains the Menagem (keep), the Paços Reais (Royal Palace) with its Noble Hall and an eight-arched loggia, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, a former collegiate area and medieval service buildings; it has been a national monument since 1910 and suffered damage in the 1969 earthquake and again in 2026.

Perched on a rocky wooded hill, the castle is an irregular polygon of grey stone curtain walls with crenellated battlements and several rectangular and circular towers. A tall square keep (Menagem) rises above the rest; adjoining the keep is a royal palace block with orange‑red tiled roofs and a long loggia of eight semicircular arches with paired capitals. Masonry shows mixed stone and brick repairs; lower service levels are built into the slope and the complex overlooks the town below.

The Castle of Leiria took its present shape across four major construction periods: the Romanesque work of the 12th century, the Dionysian Gothic of the 14th, the Johannine Gothic of the early 15th, and the restoration campaigns of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Within the irregular polygonal walls stand the Menagem keep, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, the former collegiate space, medieval barns and the Paços Reais — the Royal Palace, whose 130-square-metre Royal Hall was used by monarchs for receptions and opens onto a loggia of eight arches with twin capitals and a panorama over the city, once a place for leisure and socialising.
The castle has four floors, the lower two hardly visible from outside and given over to domestic services, with stonemasonry, brick and concrete all used in the construction. A national monument since 1910, the complex was damaged in the 1969 earthquake and again in 2026.
