Poenari Castle
Poenari Castle is a ruined medieval citadel in Romania, famously associated with Vlad the Impaler. It stands on the rocky plateau of Mount Cetatea above the Argeș River canyon and today survives as fragmentary walls and towers accessible to visitors after a steep climb.

The fortress forms a long, linear citadel running along a narrow rocky crest, its lower masonry of pale grey rubble stone topped by a conspicuous band of red brick in the upper courses. The silhouette presents a larger, irregular keep at the left end and a rounded cylindrical tower at the right, joined by a continuous curtain wall that follows the cliff edge; the site sits on a steep, tree-covered precipice above a deep river canyon and is capped at the highest point by a single flagpole.

A castle stood above the Argeș canyon long before Vlad the Impaler: the Wallachians raised Castle Argeș near this spot at the start of the 13th century, and by the mid-14th century it served as the main citadel of the Basarab dynasty. The name and the residents changed several times over the following decades before the stronghold was abandoned and left in ruins.
In 1459 Vlad the Impaler saw the potential of a second castle perched on a steep precipice of rock and repaired and consolidated the structure, arresting his enemies among the Wallachian nobility to supply the labour. Rebuilt with stones from the older Castle Poenari on the opposite bank, it became one of his main fortresses and stayed in use for many years after his death in 1476. The ruined citadel is now reached by climbing 1,480 concrete stairs.
