Bonțida Bánffy Castle

Bánffy Castle at Bonțida is a multi-period aristocratic residence near Cluj-Napoca, Romania, whose fabric combines Renaissance fortification, 18th-century Baroque reconfiguration and later Neoclassical/Neo-Gothic interventions. Long associated with the Hungarian Bánffy family, the ensemble includes a U-shaped Baroque courtyard, service ranges and an extensive designed park beside the Someș (Szamos) River. It has undergone substantial recent restoration and hosts cultural events such as the Electric Castle festival.

The shape it held in its prime.

A low, U-shaped Baroque residence of pale rendered masonry and long red clay tile roofs, anchored at one corner by a tall cylindrical tower capped by a steep conical tile roof. A separate, taller square stone tower with carved circular ornamentation rises from the roofline behind the main block. The principal façade reads as a horizontal sequence of arched or blind-arched bays and regular windows; the whole sits within a formal parkland on a broad lawn beside the Someș River, with the courtyard open to the east.
