Šariš Castle

Šariš Castle is a medieval stone hilltop castle in eastern Slovakia, historically a county seat and now a ruin above the town of Veľký Šariš. The site crowns a cone-shaped hill with a broad summit plateau and the remaining stone walls and tower fragments form a low, broken silhouette along the ridge. The castle was built from the 13th century and destroyed by fire in 1678.

As it stood in 1650

What Šariš Castle looked like in its prime.

Perched on the flat summit of a steep, cone-shaped hill, the stone castle forms an irregular line of ruined curtain walls and tower fragments around the plateau edge. Built of local grey-brown masonry, its surviving elements include low wall stretches, taller tower remnants and scattered foundation footprints across the summit. From a distance the ruins appear as a ragged band along the hilltop, the plateau dropping away steeply to the surrounding plain and town below.

Its story

The story of Šariš Castle.

Šariš Castle crowns a cone-shaped hill with a wide summit plateau at about 570 metres, above the town of Veľký Šariš in eastern Slovakia. Built from the 13th century in Gothic and later Renaissance style, it served as the original seat of Šariš county for several centuries — both the county and the traditional region draw their name from the castle.

The castle was destroyed by fire in 1678 and never recovered. Its broken silhouette of stone walls and tower fragments still runs along the ridge 6–7 km northwest of Prešov, and the ruin is listed in the National Cultural Heritage register of the Slovak Republic.
