Strečno Castle
Strečno Castle is a medieval stone castle perched on a 103-metre calcite cliff above the Váh river in northern Slovakia. It developed from a 14th-century watchtower into an irregular-plan fortress with palaces, chapel, deep well and multiple bastions; it was largely ruined after demolition orders in 1698 and later reconstructed in the 20th century. Today it houses museum expositions and remains a prominent landmark above the Strečno gorge.

What Strečno Castle looked like in its prime.
Perched on a steep pale-grey calcite cliff above the river and road, the castle reads as an irregular cluster of rubble-stone curtain walls and connected buildings; a broad arched main gate (approached by a timber bridge) opens into an inner ward dominated by a square multi-storey bergfried rising above the roofs. The northern palace and attached chapel present small gothic windows and vaulted stonework; low slit windows, bastion platforms and patched masonry define the defensive silhouette.

The first recorded mention of the stone castle at Strečno dates from 1316, in the period when it was owned by Matthew III Csák. From a 14th-century watchtower it grew into an irregular-plan fortress with palaces, a chapel, a deep well and multiple bastions, perched on a 103-metre calcite cliff above the Váh, twelve kilometres east of Žilina.
Modifications were made in 1663–1664, while Wesselényi prepared his plot against the House of Habsburg, but demolition orders of 1698 left the castle largely ruined. At the beginning of the 20th century it was sold to a businessman, Samuel Hahn.
Reconstructed in the 20th century, the castle now houses expositions of the Váh region museum, the Považské múzeum v Žiline, and with the nearby Old Castle (Starhrad) forms a landmark of the Upper Váh region; it belongs to the national cultural heritage of the Slovak Republic.
