The fortress crowns a rocky, grassy hill as a long linear complex of warm yellow-brown masonry. A continuous outer curtain wall is punctuated by several tall, rectangular, crenellated towers; four prominent square towers dominate the visible line. A recessed arched gateway sits in the curtain, and the inner fortress rises immediately behind with several solid stone tower volumes (originally six). The slope below is punctuated by limestone outcrops and pasture.

The Castle of Molina de Aragón, also called alcázar or alcazaba, commands a hill above the surrounding valley in Castile-La Mancha. It originated as a Moorish fortress of the 10th–11th centuries, built over a pre-existing Celtiberian castle, and served as the residence of the lords of the taifa of Molina. El Cid resided here during his exile from Castile.

In 1129 it was conquered from the Moors by Alfonso I of Aragon, who gave it to the Lara family. An external line of walls with four gates and numerous towers defends the inner fortress, whose six towers include four still in good condition; the site was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931.
