Perched directly on a jagged pale limestone outcrop, the plan is dominated by a tall, rectangular stone keep rising above continuous crenellated curtain walls. The curtain has regular merlons and a protected wall-walk, with a prominent rounded gate tower at the approach and an arched entrance through the curtain. Masonry is light beige and rough-faced ashlar, walls step down the rock, and the whole fortress appears complete with battlements and narrow vertical slits for defence.

In the 14th century, Almansa and its fortress became part of the lordship of Villena, and Don Juan Manuel ordered the rebuilding of its walls. Juan Pacheco gave the castle its present form between 1449 and 1454, before it fell into abandonment from the 16th century and underwent continuous restoration from 1952.
