Castle of Sigüenza
The Castle of the Bishops of Sigüenza crowns the town of Sigüenza in central Spain and served as the episcopal residence. The medieval fortress was transformed into an episcopal palace in the late 18th century, severely damaged in the early 19th century, and restored and reopened as a parador (state-run hotel) in the 1970s.

A compact stone fortress perched above the town on a rocky rise, its high curtain walls and crenellations enclosing a rectilinear mass of masonry. The late-18th-century palace façade punctures the fortress with regular rectangular windows and iron balconies; adjacent ranges show tiled pitched roofs over domestic buildings. The masonry is warm, weathered limestone; an arched main gate gives onto an inner courtyard, and the restored fabric appears intact and in continuous use in 1978.

In the late 18th century the medieval fortress was transformed into an episcopal palace, only to be severely damaged in the early 19th century. Restored in the 1970s, it reopened as a parador — one of Spain's state-run hotels — and continues in that role today.
