Olyka Castle

Olyka Castle is a large palazzo-in-fortezza built from 1554–1564 for the Radziwiłł family and later remodelled as a baroque residence. The almost-square fortress encloses a vast central courtyard and a three-storey southeastern palace wing beneath a red-tiled roof; it has been restored and is open to the public under the Volyn museum.

The shape it held in its prime.

An almost-regular square fortress with embanked corner bastions and a brick-stoned moat on three sides; three two-storey wings and one three-storey palace surround a very large central courtyard. Façades are smooth yellow plaster with white pilaster strips and regular rectangular windows; the palace has a red-tiled, steep baroque roof with small dormer openings. A baroque clock tower rises over the north-west gate; an open arcaded gallery with cross vaults and an Italian-style balcony face the courtyard.

Its story

The story of Olyka Castle.

Olyka Castle was constructed in 1564 and became the principal seat of the Radziwiłł family in Volhynia, then part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. A "palazzo in fortezza" — a noble residence built within a fortified complex — it is one of the largest aristocratic residences in Ukraine, with over two hundred rooms and a courtyard larger than the Piazza San Marco in Venice.

The Radziwiłłs held Olyka for almost four hundred years, the castle serving as the main seat of one of the three family branches. Prince Michał Radziwiłł turned the fortress into a magnificent baroque residence between 1737 and 1760, though from 1840 onwards no family members lived there. The last owner, Janusz Radziwiłł, kept the castle until 1945, when it was confiscated and turned into a psychiatric hospital.

The complex forms an almost regular square of embankments with four corner bastions, three sides protected by a brick-lined moat, a baroque clock tower rising over the north-western gate and a three-storey palace on the south-east. Its rooms once held Radziwiłł family paintings and a large collection of art and furniture, none of which survived the devastation of the Second World War. In 2021 the castle was transferred to the Volyn museum and is now open to the public.
