Castell Dinas Brân

Castell Dinas Brân is a medieval hilltop castle in Denbighshire, Wales, occupying a prominent rocky summit above the Dee Valley near Llangollen. The visible stone castle dates to the 1260s and consists of rectangular curtain walls, corner strongholds and internal ranges sited within an earlier Iron Age hillfort enclosure. It fell into ruin after the late 13th century and survives today as earthworks and stone remains on the summit.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on a grassy, rocky ridge, the castle forms a roughly rectangular stone enclosure with its longer sides running east–west and a steep drop to the north. The southern and eastern defenses include a deep rock-cut ditch and counterscarp bank. A two-storey keep occupies the south‑eastern corner and a gatehouse with twin towers stands at the north‑east; an apsidal (D‑shaped) Welsh Tower projects into the ditch near the Great Hall on the southern side. Low curtain walls and scattered masonry remain across the summit.
