Toponymic — from the fortress town of Almeida on the Spanish frontier, whose name is Arabic: al-mā'ida, 'the table' or plateau, a relic of Moorish rule.
The history of Almeida
Almeida is a star-fort town guarding the frontier with Spain, and its name is a small monument to the centuries of Moorish rule over Iberia — al-mā'ida, the table or flat height. A family from Almeida carried the Arabic place-name into a thoroughly Portuguese surname, and on into Brazil and the empire.
