A diminutive of fort, 'strong' — 'the sturdy little one' — or from a small fortified place, a fortin.
The history of Fortin
Fortin carries the root fort, strong, in its affectionate diminutive — the small but sturdy man — and as a place-element can also mean a little fort. From founding settler stock it took hold especially in the Beauce and the lower St Lawrence.
