'Son of Karl' — Karl meaning, at root, a free man (the same word as 'churl' and 'carl'). A royal name of Sweden many times over, and one of the commonest patronymics.
The history of Karlsson
Karl carried a double weight: the old Germanic word for a free man, and the name of a long line of Swedish kings down to Carl XVI Gustaf today. Its patronymic Karlsson — Carlsson with the older C — is among the most numerous Swedish surnames, and gave Astrid Lindgren her rooftop imp, Karlsson-on-the-Roof.
