From the given name Laurent — Latin Laurentius — borne on the cult of Saint Laurence, the deacon martyred on a gridiron in Rome for refusing to surrender the Church's treasure.
The history of Laurent
Saint Laurence was one of the most venerated martyrs of medieval Europe, and his name Laurent spread widely through France as given name and then surname. For the French diaspora it carries an extra charge: it was on his feast day in 1535 that Jacques Cartier entered the gulf he named for the saint — the Saint Lawrence, the river road into the heart of New France down which almost every French settler of Canada would come.
