Topographic — la voie, 'the road' or way — for a family whose house stood by the highway or track.
The history of Lavoie
Lavoie names the road: the family at the wayside, on the way through. A modest topographic name in France, it descends in Quebec largely from a single settler line and has become one of the common names of the province — the wayside of Old France transplanted.
