A nickname from more, 'Moor' — for a man of dark hair or complexion — with the diminutive -eau: 'the little dark one'.
The history of Moreau
Moreau marked the dark-haired or swarthy man, more — the Moor — being the medieval French shorthand for darkness of colouring after centuries of contact across the Mediterranean, softened here by the affectionate -eau. It is the close cousin in formation of Morin, and one of the commonest surnames France carried into the New World.
