Aigai
Aigai (Aegae) was the original capital of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, located on a plateau at the foothills of the Pierian Mountains. The site preserves a monumental palace with a large peristyle and a neighbouring theatre, and the Great Tumulus containing royal burial tombs including Tomb II.

Set on a low plateau overlooking the central Macedonian plain, the site is dominated by a rectilinear palace block centred on a large open courtyard encircled by Doric colonnades; many columns reconstructed to near-original height, marble-covered masonry and painted plastered wall surfaces. Broad stone pavements and mosaic floors occupy interior courts, while a semicircular stone theatre sits adjacent, cut into the slope. Nearby earthen tumuli and exposed limestone foundation courses of buildings punctuate a grassy plain beneath wooded hills.
