Old Royal Palace

The Old Royal Palace in Athens is a neoclassical, three-storey rectangular palace designed by Friedrich von Gärtner and completed in 1843. Erected on a gentle hill facing Syntagma Square, it served as the first royal residence of modern Greece and contains large central reception rooms, two internal courtyards and formal classical porticoes.

What Old Royal Palace looked like in its prime.

A massive, rectangular three‑storey neoclassical block of pale ochre plaster and stone, roughly 90 m across on its principal facades. Regular rectangular windows are linked by horizontal stringcourses; the central wing projects slightly and is capped by a double‑pitched tiled roof and triangular pediment. A six‑column Doric portico sits on a broad Pentelic marble podium reached by wide steps. Materials are stone, Pentelic marble and timber; two internal atria puncture the plan.
