Diolkos
The Diolkos was an ancient paved trackway across the Isthmus of Corinth that allowed ships and cargo to be moved overland between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. Built in the Archaic period and used for centuries, it consisted of a stone roadway with parallel guiding grooves and served both commercial and occasional military transport.

A roughly paved limestone track of rectangular poros slabs 3.5–6 m wide, set in a shallow cambered bed with a pair of parallel guiding grooves about 1.6 m apart. The stone slabs are worn and irregular with soil in the joints; low earthen banks and small curbs flank the corridor. The roadway slopes gently across the isthmus, the western stretch running close and parallel to the pale-blue bay, where the sea is visible beyond the worn pavement.
