Wereldmuseum Berg en Dal

The Africa Museum (Afrika Museum) in Berg en Dal was a museum complex on the outskirts of Nijmegen presenting African art, culture and rebuilt architecture. The site combined indoor galleries with an outdoor exhibition of reconstructed village architecture from Ghana, Mali and Benin. The museum was active until it closed in November 2023.

What Wereldmuseum Berg en Dal looked like in its prime.

A low-slung mid-20th-century museum complex set in parkland, paired with a series of outdoor reconstructed African buildings: earthen Dogon dwellings with rounded mud walls, timber-and-thatch Kusasi compounds around small courtyards, and stilted wooden pile houses over a pond. Gravel paths, grassy lawns and interpretive panels link the indoor galleries to the open-air village clusters; display windows and a modest entrance lobby mark the enclosed museum buildings. Natural earth tones dominate—ochres, browns, weathered timber and straw.
