Trajan's Bridge

Trajan's Bridge was a Roman long-span bridge across the lower Danube, completed in 105 AD to connect the forts of Drobeta (north bank) and Pontes (south bank). It comprised a wooden superstructure of long segmental arches carried on twenty large brick-faced masonry piers, with monumental gateway arches at each end.

A continuous oak timber roadway of broad planked decks and massive curved wooden arches spans the Danube, borne on a linear sequence of tall rectangular masonry piers faced with Roman bricks and mortar. The bridge is 15 m wide and about 19 m above the waterline; each 38 m timber arch springs between the 20 brick piers. Monumental stone gateway arches and the low fort ramparts sit at the two riverbanks, with river traffic passing beneath the high spans.
