Sarmizegetusa Regia
Sarmizegetusa Regia was the principal political, military and religious centre of the Dacians, located on a 1,200 m-high mountain in the Orăștie Mountains. The site comprises a terraced citadel built in the murus dacicus technique and an adjacent sacred zone with circular and rectangular sanctuaries, paved features and domestic terraces. It was at its apogee under King Decebal and later partly dismantled during the Roman conquest.

Perched on a mountain crest, the site is laid out on five grassy terraces bounded by a massive murus dacicus stone wall forming an irregular hexagonal citadel. The sacred terrace contains two circular stone-kerbed enclosures with inner settings of closely spaced upright timber posts, and blocks marking rectangular temple bases. A large circular andesite paved disk with radiating segments sits on the terrace; paved andesite approaches and traces of ceramic water pipes connect terraces. Dense forest and mountain ridges frame the complex.
