Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar

Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza

The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is a large Baroque co-cathedral in Zaragoza, Aragon, centred on a small wooden image of the Virgin mounted on a jasper column. The present basilica was built in stages from 1681 to 1872 and is characterised by its long brick façades, a central dome flanked by ten smaller domes roofed in multicoloured glazed tiles, and four tall corner towers. Its interior contains multiple chapels, a prominent Santa Capilla that houses the pillar, and several frescoed domes including work by Francisco de Goya.

Long rectangular brick body 130 m across the river, pierced by large circular oculi and a series of eleven domes roofed in green, yellow, blue and white glazed tiles. A dominant central stone dome rises above the nave, flanked symmetrically by smaller domes and capped at the corners by four tall multi-stage towers with green copper spires and gilded finials. Exterior walls show pilasters and classical porticoes; interiors are stuccoed with heavy classical pillars, barrel vaults and richly painted dome lunettes.
