Perched on a steep rocky outcrop above Travnik, the fortress is a compact, multi-terraced complex of pale grey limestone walls and stepped curtain ramparts. The plan rises in successive platforms with angular bastions and a prominent cylindrical tower capped by a conical metal roof beside a low rectangular keep with simple pitched/metal roofs. A slender stone minaret rises within the inner ward, and stone stairpaths and a main gate give access from the town below; walls show small embrasures and parapet walks.
