Bezděz Castle
Bezděz Castle is a 13th‑century Gothic royal castle on a solitary phonolite hill in northern Bohemia, begun under King Ottokar II and completed under Wenceslaus II. Perched above dense forest, it retains its main palace range, a large cylindrical bergfried, chapel and long curtain walls, and today is a well‑known historic ruin and visitor site.

Perched on a steep, isolated phonolite hill, the castle forms a long linear complex along the ridge: a rectangular royal palace range with a dark pitched roof, a tall cylindrical stone bergfried rising near the centre, and extensive crenellated curtain walls running down the ridge to a separate round tower at the lower end. Stone is pale weathered grey; the chapel abuts the palace with a small pointed spire. Surrounding slopes are densely wooded, the site dominating the skyline.

Bezděz was begun before 1264 by order of King Ottokar II of Bohemia and completed under Wenceslaus II. Erected between 1260 and 1280 on the phonolite hill of Velký Bezděz, 604 metres above sea level, it met the demands for an inaccessible as well as respectable royal castle and became the characteristic landmark of the surrounding landscape.
It ranked among the most important Gothic castles in the Czech lands until its destruction in the Thirty Years' War. The castle still retains its main palace range, a large cylindrical bergfried, a chapel and long curtain walls, and survives today as a well-known historic ruin and visitor site about 20 kilometres southeast of Česká Lípa.
