Kokořín Castle
Kokořín Castle is a 14th-century hilltop castle in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Perched on a wooded sandstone promontory, it features a prominent cylindrical keep, an enclosing crenellated curtain wall and a rectangular residential block with a steep red-tiled roof; the site was later reconstructed in the early 20th century and is a protected cultural monument.

A compact medieval fortress set on a wooded sandstone promontory, dominated by a tall cylindrical bergfried with a crenellated parapet and steep conical roof; a long, crenellated curtain wall curves around an irregular oval bailey. A rectangular residential block (palas) with a steep red clay-tile roof sits against the wall on one side, with smaller conical-roofed turrets and a stone entrance stair. Walls are light-grey masonry; the castle is tightly enclosed and overlooks dense mixed forest on all sides.

The story of Kokořín Castle.
Kokořín Castle was built in the first half of the 14th century by order of Hynek Berka of Dubá, on a wooded sandstone promontory in what is now the Central Bohemian Region. Heavily damaged during the Hussite Wars, it afterwards changed owners often, the Řitka of Bezdědice and the Klinštejns in the 15th century, the Beřkov family of Šebířov in the 16th, and stood in ruins for centuries.
In 1894 the Prague businessman Václav Špaček bought the ruins, and his son Jan had the castle reconstructed in neo-Gothic style in the campaign of 1911–1918. Nationalised in 1948, it was returned to the Špaček family in 2006.
The castle, a cylindrical keep, crenellated curtain wall and a rectangular residential block under a steep red-tiled roof, has been a national cultural monument since 2001, and gives its name to the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area.
