As it stood in 1760
What Poděbrady Castle looked like in its prime.
A compact multi-wing castle complex showing layers of Renaissance and later Baroque work: plastered masonry facades with a regular rhythm of tall, rectangular windows and cornice lines, low continuous rooflines over the wings, and a principal façade facing into the town with a central entrance and an open forecourt. The ensemble reads as an adapted noble residence rather than a high-medieval fortress, with coherent mid-18th-century Baroque surface treatments over an older structural plan.
Its story
The story of Poděbrady Castle.
Poděbrady Castle stands in the town of Poděbrady in the Czech Republic. King Ottokar II of Bohemia replaced an earlier structure with a stone castle that became the seat of the Lordship of Poděbrady. Around 1373 it came into the possession of the Kunštát family: after Emperor Charles IV gave Poděbrady to Boček as a hereditary possession, Boček styled himself "of Poděbrady", founding the Poděbrady line of the Kunštát family.
The medieval stronghold was rebuilt in the Renaissance and altered again in Baroque style, remaining a royal and noble residence through the Habsburg period; under Joseph II it housed retired Imperial Army officers. In 1839 the Crown sold the castle and lordship to the Viennese banker Georg Simon Sina, and in 1884, through marriage, it passed to the Counts of Ypsilanti.
