Sedlec Ossuary

Kostel Všech svatých

The Sedlec Ossuary is a small Roman Catholic chapel beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints in Sedlec (suburb of Kutná Hora), famous for its decorative use of human bones. The lower chapel (ossuary) contains tens of thousands of skeletons artistically arranged into fixtures and sculptures, while the Gothic-Baroque church stands above amid the abbey cemetery.

What Sedlec Ossuary looked like in its prime.

A compact two-storey cemetery chapel of pale ashlar and rendered walls with pointed Gothic window openings, stepped buttresses and steep, dark slate roofs. Three slender, lantern-topped towers rise above the roofline; a low enclosing cemetery wall surrounds the building and grave markers crowd the foreground. The exterior surfaces show stone dressings around tall lancet windows and a restrained Baroque-Gothic silhouette after Santini's early-18th-century rebuilding, in sound condition at the time of the 1870 interior re‑decoration.
