Søborg Castle
Søborg Castle is a medieval Danish castle ruin on what was originally an island in a fjord south of Gilleleje in North Zealand. It was an important stronghold and prison from the Middle Ages until it was abandoned and partly destroyed during the Count's Feud in 1535. Archaeology shows a late 13th-century castle core with a distinctive octagonal tower and broad earthen ramparts.

Perched on an island in a shallow fjord, the castle at its height was a compact stone stronghold: a late-13th-century castle proper with surrounding curtain walls and an adjacent octagonal tower, all set inside a broad earthen rampart and moat. Walls are built of rough grey-brown fieldstone; roofs on domestic buildings were covered with early ceramic tiles (imported from Lombardy). The overall silhouette is low and stout with the octagonal tower as the most prominent vertical element.

Søborg Castle, on what was originally an island in a fjord south of Gilleleje in North Zealand, is first known from the 12th century, when ownership passed from the king to the Bishop of Roskilde. It ranked among the strongest castles in Denmark and doubled as a prison — Valdemar IV, Duke of Schleswig, was confined here in 1285–86.
Archaeology shows a late 13th-century castle core with a distinctive octagonal tower and broad earthen ramparts. Søborg remained inhabited until the Count's Feud of 1535, when it is thought to have been destroyed; in 1577 the feudal tenant was granted permission to use the ruins as a quarry.
