Castle of Pierrefonds
The Château de Pierrefonds is a large medieval-style castle in Pierrefonds, Oise, France, rebuilt in the late 14th century and extensively restored in the 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc under Napoleon III. It combines massive cylindrical towers, high slate roofs and crenellated curtain walls and is managed today by the Centre des monuments nationaux. The exterior restoration recreated a fortified silhouette while many interior decorations reflect 19th-century invention rather than strictly documentary restoration.

Wide fortified façade dominated by several huge cylindrical drum towers with corbelled machicolations and crenellated parapets, linked by high curtain walls and a central arched gatehouse with iron portcullis. Pale cream ashlar limestone faces contrast with steep, dark slate conical and pyramidal roofs and smaller corner turrets. A flagged causeway and low forecourt lead to the gate; the silhouette reads as a compact complex of towers, battlements and high rooflines set on the forest edge.

A castle stood on this site from the 12th century. In 1392 King Charles VI raised the County of Valois into a duchy for his brother Louis I, Duke of Orléans, who from 1393 until his death in 1407 had the castle rebuilt by the court architect Jean le Noir.
In March 1617, early in Louis XIII's troubled reign, the castle belonged to François Annibal d'Estrées, brother of Gabrielle d'Estrées, Henri IV's mistress and advisor. When he joined the "parti des mécontents" led by the Prince of Condé, troops sent by Cardinal Richelieu besieged and took Pierrefonds. Demolition began — roofs destroyed, exterior works razed, towers breached — but the task proved too enormous to finish.
The château underwent a major restoration in the 19th century, and despite that rebuilding it still displays most of the characteristics of medieval defensive military architecture. It stands on the southeast edge of the forest of Compiègne, between Villers-Cotterêts and Compiègne, northeast of Paris.
