Fraxinetum

Fraxinetum was a Muslim fortress and frontier settlement on the Mont des Maures near modern La Garde-Freinet, active from about 887 until its defeat in 972. From this hilltop base the settlers controlled coastal approaches and Alpine passes and used ships based on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez for raids and communications.

As it stood in 945

The shape it held in its prime.

A compact stone fortification crowning the rounded, tree-covered crest of the Mont des Maures above La Garde-Freinet, set well above a small coastal settlement and the wide sweep of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The hill is clothed in dense ash forest with a single steep, narrow track winding to the summit; the fortress presents contiguous stone ramparts and defensive platforms hugging the crest and commands long views inland toward mountain passes and seaward across the gulf.
