Château de Thil
The Château de Thil is a medieval castle site in Vic-sous-Thil, Côte-d'Or, France, with occupation traceable from the early 11th century and major building phases from the 13th to 16th centuries. The remains form an ovoid enceinte containing a reduit and a lower courtyard, with surviving elements including a chapel, residence ranges and tower fragments. An ovoid curtain wall encloses a compact inner ward composed of a raised reduit and a lower courtyard; building masses step up within the enceinte from single-storey domestic ranges to a taller residence tower. Ruined fragments of a probable watch tower and storeroom adjoin a small medieval chapel. Rooflines at prime are a jumble of pitched roofs and gabled ranges clustered inside the rounded outer wall, the whole ensemble tightly packed within the ovoid plan.

A fortress at Thil is documented from 1016, on a map of Flavigny, and occupation of the site west of Dijon continued until the 17th century. Building studies distinguish phases from the 13th to the 16th century: a 13th-century residence with a storeroom and probably a watch tower, a chapel dating from 1085, and, at the end of the 14th century, a residence tower and habitable building that redefined the space now referred to as the reduit.
The castle's high point is linked to Jean de Thil, who at the end of the 14th century equipped the site with its most beautiful architectural elements, notably the collegiate church. The enceinte was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries as the site improved its residential qualities while safeguarding its defences. Heavily restored during the 20th century, the ovoid enceinte with its reduit and lower courtyard remains privately owned, listed as a monument historique since 1905 and regarded as a major site for Burgundian castral architecture.
