Perched on a rounded, terraced hill above a town, the castle is dominated by a tall, narrow square stone keep rising from the summit, flanked by a compact group of lower stone service buildings and a small secondary tower on the ridge. The hill slopes are divided into regular agricultural plots and terraces down to the town, whose church spire sits lower on the ridge; roofs are steep and the masonry is light-coloured local stone. At its prime the keep and ancillary buildings were complete and roofed.

The Eresburg was the largest of the well-known Old Saxon refuge castles — a Volksburg — built on the plateau of a low table hill, the Eresberg, 130–150 metres above the Diemel, a tributary of the Weser. It stood in the extreme south of the Saxon Gau of Engern, on the border with the Duchy of Franconia, at what is now the village of Obermarsberg in the borough of Marsberg.
Earlier research cast the site as a border castle of the Cherusci tribe and a fortress of Prince Segestes, who was supposed to have held his daughter Thusnelda prisoner here. What is recorded is a bloody feud fought at the Eresburg in 915 between the Saxon duke Henry the Fowler and the East Frankish king Conrad. Only fragmentary remains survive on the summit today, dominated by a single tall stone tower on the rocky ridge.
