Helfenstein Castle is the medieval burg of the counts of Helfenstein, located on a steep limestone ridge above Geislingen an der Steige in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The castle was destroyed in 1552 and today survives only as ruins on the crag. The site marks the former defensive stronghold overlooking the town and surrounding valley.

What Helfenstein Castle looked like in its prime.

Perched on a steep pale-grey limestone crag, the castle is defined by a long continuous curtain wall that follows the ridge and a prominent square/rectangular stone tower at the western end flying a flag. The walls are built of roughly hewn light-coloured masonry, set directly on exposed rock ledges; rocky outcrops and fractured wall fragments continue eastward along the ridge. At its prime the tower and curtain formed an unbroken defensive line above the valley.

Helfenstein Castle was established as the fortified seat of the counts of Helfenstein in the early 12th century. It later became a possession of the imperial city of Ulm, which bought it outright in 1396 and expanded it into a gunpowder fortress. In 1552 it changed hands during the Second Margrave War before Ulm recaptured and demolished its own fortress.
