Schaumburg Castle stands above the town of Rinteln in Lower Saxony, in the district of Schaumburg to which it gave its name. Long the property of the princely family of Schaumburg-Lippe, it was returned to the prince by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1907 and remained a private residence of the house into the 21st century, latterly under Alexander, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe.

In 2022 the castle was acquired from the Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe by the entrepreneur Pieter Haitsma Mulier and his wife Vanessa, Princess zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, closing more than a century of renewed princely ownership that had begun with the 1907 restitution.
