Old Navarino Castle
Old Navarino Castle is a 13th-century Frankish fortress perched on a high rock overlooking the bay of Pylos in the Peloponnese. It commands the northern edge of the harbour and stood alongside a later Ottoman-built New Navarino; by the 19th century the old castle was described as essentially a ruin.

As it stood in 1500
The shape it held in its prime.
A compact stone fortress crowns a 200‑metre rock formation with sheer cliffs dropping to the bay on its seaward sides. A continuous curtain wall follows the summit, punctuated by defensive projections and a dominant landward entrance; roofs of halls and service buildings filled the interior at its prime. Built of local masonry with a roughly textured stone surface, the castle overlooks the northern edge of the bay and commands views across the harbour.
