What Tata Castle looked like in its prime.
A compact, multi-level stone castle of warm grey-brown rubble masonry with pale limestone dressings and low-pitched red terracotta roofs. The principal façade displays two large, high gabled recesses with pointed-arch heads set in lighter ashlar, pierced by narrow tall windows; a square, blocky tower rises above with small paired openings on its upper stage. The building sits at the water’s edge amid lawns and shrubs, with robust curtain walls and rectangular buttresses visible along the sides.
Its story
The story of Tata Castle.
Tata Castle was built in the mid-14th century on the northern tip of Lake Öreg, the Old Lake. Its blooming came under Sigismund of Luxembourg and Mátyás Hunyadi (r. 1458–1490), when it served as the summer resort of the king and a favoured residence.
The castle was burnt by the Habsburgs and later renovated. Its walls today carry the marks of romantic style, the legacy of the Esterházy family, who used to live here, and the restored castle remains one of the jewels of Tata.
