Perched on a rocky, tree-covered 440 m summit, the castle forms an irregular polygon of pale grey limestone curtain walls hugging the craggy ridge. Low terraced baileys step down the slopes and scattered foundation outlines mark former domestic ranges; a higher mass of masonry rises near the summit above the surrounding wall line. The main gate and its gate-tower project from the most exposed slope, and traces of an outer wooden palisade run along the lower scarp; at its prime the stone walls were continuous with crenellated parapets and roofed ranges inside.

Drégely Castle crowns a 440-metre peak of the Börzsöny mountains in Nógrád County, Hungary. It was probably built in the second half of the 13th century by the Bozók branch of the Hunt-Poznan family, by order of Béla IV, and first appears in a charter of 1285 as Castrum Dragul, the possession of Demeter of that family. The small border castle served as the county dungeon and held the archives of Hont County.

In 1390 King Sigismund exchanged the castle with the Tary family for lands in Somogy county, but the Crown later reacquired it because of the despotic measures of the Tary family and their castellan. A high priest afterwards rebuilt Drégely as his hunting seat.

The castle's end came in 1552, when it was besieged and largely destroyed. It has stood as a ruin ever since, and its hilltop remains have been partly conserved and restored in recent decades.
