Kilkea Castle

Kilkea Castle is a medieval stone stronghold near the village of Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, long held by the Fitzgerald family. Built on the site of an 1180 motte-and-bailey, it was substantially rebuilt in 1426 and remained an occupied fortified residence for centuries before later restorations and conversion to a hotel and resort.

The shape it held in its prime.

A stone-built medieval stronghold occupying the site of an earlier motte-and-bailey, set amid its estate near the village of Kilkea beside the regional R418. After the 1426 works the castle presents continuous masonry defensive works and domestic ranges rising above the surrounding parkland; a clear internal bailey lies within the outer works and roofed living ranges sit within the curtain. Condition at prime: complete, occupied and fortified following the 1426 rebuilding campaign.
