The castle sits on a wooded, terraced slope with distant snow-capped mountains behind it.

By 1155 the Lords of Säben, of the Volser family, had been named burgraves of the Hochstift of Brixen on Mount Säben. When tensions arose in 1255 between Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg and some of his ministeriales, among them Heinrich and Buchard von Säben, the Lords of Säben built Branzoll Castle at the entrance to the hilltop episcopal castle, on the southern slope of Mount Säben below Säben Abbey and above the town of Klausen in South Tyrol.

The castle consists of a small inner bailey protected by a zwinger, an outer bailey now laid out as a garden, and a bergfried more than 20 metres high. Restoration completed in 1912 added a new residential structure and a semicircular stair tower between bergfried and residence, and the restored curtain wall was partially crowned with battlements. The castle also holds a footnote in gaming history: Blackmoor, the first fantasy role-playing campaign setting, used a kit model of Branzoll to represent the titular Castle Blackmoor.
