Sforza Castle
The Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) in Milan is a large 15th-century fortified ducal residence built by Francesco Sforza on earlier Visconti foundations. It later became a major citadel, was heavily modified in the 16th century, and now houses several civic museums and a historic library. The complex combines a quadrangular plan of brick curtain walls, corner towers and inner courts and was extensively restored in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

The shape it held in its prime.
A massive quadrangular red-brick fortress with long, low curtain walls punctuated by regular arched window openings and a crenellated parapet of swallow-tail merlons. City-facing round drum towers rise at the corners; a taller multi-stage central tower (Torre del Filarete) dominates the silhouette with an open upper loggia. The base is set above a dry ditch/moat and parade ground that becomes a broad grassy public space; tiled roofs top some towers and loggias; wall surfaces show painted panels and coats of arms.
