Castel Nuovo

Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino) is a medieval royal castle in central Naples, built from 1279 and largely rebuilt in the mid-15th century in its present form. The complex features five large cylindrical towers, a monumental white marble triumphal arch as the main entrance, a Palatine Chapel and several grand halls now housing museum spaces.

The shape it held in its prime.

A low, irregular trapezoidal stone fortress fronting the city square, dominated by five large cylindrical towers crowned with crenellations set on projecting corbels. Four towers are faced in dark piperno volcanic stone, one in lighter tuff; curtain walls of the same stone link them. The principal entrance is a tall, white marble triumphal arch set centrally between three landward towers. The castle sits directly at the edge of the urban esplanade with stepped terraces and gardens below the entrance.
