Teatro alla Scala (La Scala) is Milan's historic opera house, inaugurated in 1778 on the site of the former church of Santa Maria della Scala. It quickly became Italy's preeminent opera venue, with a multi-tiered horseshoe auditorium of private boxes, a prominent stage and an active foyer linked to a theatre museum.

A dignified Neoclassical stone façade with a triangular pediment and a three-arched ground-level loggia opens onto a broad cobbled square; rows of evenly spaced tall windows and shallow pilasters mark the upper floors. The auditorium is a horseshoe-shaped, multi-tiered stack of private boxes rising steeply to an upper gallery (loggione), finished in warm woods, painted ornament and textiles. The stage is deep and tall, originally lit with banks of oil lamps; overall scale is urban and civic, with close sightlines from boxes.
